Changes in 2025 trends in patenting landscape of India

Patents in the modern day help to drive innovation as well as economic growth. Recently Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi envisioned the “techade”. The recent surge to file patent in india has increased to more than 50% in the past five years. India also climbed to a position of more than 39th in the Global Innovation Index 2024. It also highlights India's progress in gaining more ambition from top countries to achieve innovation.

Performance in patents:

The Government of India has been drafting a strategic blueprint on increasing IP to raise capital. Intangible assets also account for more than 85% of the S&P 500 valuation.  The country is also working towards creating a uniform IP valuation system enabling IP evaluators to enhance IP-backed financing. These would also make a better attribute to generate awareness as well as alleviate the risk aversions.

India also gained more aspirations which extend to easily achieving the 10th of global patents. These sixth-generation mobile services through the Bharat 6G Alliance have achieved significant milestones in the world's largest mobile phone producer. These initiatives from the companies also build on India’s National IPR Policy easily setting priorities in knowledge-driven development. These also significantly emphasize IP commercialization along with human resource development and stronger IPR administration.

Patent registration in 2025:

More than 3.55 million patent applications were filed worldwide in 2023. These also gained a 2.7 percent increase from the previous year. India gained 90298 office applications filed that year. These also reflect a 17.2 percent rise from 2022 and an increase of 25.2 % from 2021. These also improved to more than 55.2% of the patent application filings in the year 2023.

These patents have been filed domestically by Indian residents. It also signals the growing domestic innovation. The patent registration in India also aligns with the global trend of increased resident filings in 2025.

The modern-day shift in resident filing distribution in India over the past decade has increased from 24.8% to a higher level. India’s contribution to the global origin filings also remained modest at the highest level. It has increased by more than 15% showing significant improvement. Patent filings have consistently dominated grants to the highest levels.
